Preparation of Manuscripts

Manuscripts are encouraged from any geographers involved or interested in applied geography -- academics, practitioners in the public and private sectors, and students. Papers submitted for publication in the Papers of Applied Geography Conferences should be empirical in nature emphasizing the application of research results. Methodological articles that demonstrate new applications for existing methods or the development of new techniques/methodologies for geographic problem-solving are appropriate. Theoretical papers addressing applied geography and problem-solving are also acceptable for submission. Review articles that survey existing practice and/or highly theoretical articles not emphasizing geographic applications should be submitted to other more appropriate outlets.

The guidelines for preparing manuscripts for possible publication in the 2008 Volume are accessible from this website (paper guidelines). Please let other prospective authors know about them. Note that the requirements have changed from previous years, in order to facilitate printing. MANUSCRIPTS NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE EDITORIAL POLICY OR NOT MEETING STYLE GUIDELINES WILL BE RETURNED TO THE AUTHOR.

Authors should submit their papers and AV request form to the Editor (and to Session Chairs if the paper is part of an organized session) no later than June 1, 2008. Manuscripts should be sent to Dr. Jay Lee, Department of Geography, 413 McGilvrey Hall, Kent State University, Kent, OH 44242. Email jlee@kent.edu. First drafts should be submitted electronically either on a diskette or through e-mail.

All manuscripts must be submitted using WORD, preferably, or if using WordPerfect, save the file in Rich Text Format (rtf). Any paper submitted to the editor in improper format will be returned to the author. This includes proper preparation of Tables, Maps and/or Figures, with proper captions, footnoting and referencing.

Papers will be sent out for review. Authors will be notified of the results of this review as soon as it becomes available. Changes to papers must be made by the authors quickly as the turnaround time for publication is relatively short. For organized sessions, Session Chairs should also recommend whether the manuscript is suitable for publication based upon technical merit and editorial policy.

NO paper may exceed 10 pages, including all supporting materials. If a paper is submitted that exceeds 10 pages, please include a check for $100 per page for each page in excess of 10. No paper may exceed 12 pages.

All papers must be single-spaced. To ensure consistency of appearance, manuscripts should be prepared using the 9 point Times New Roman type face. Times New Roman must be used in all diagrams, graphs, and headings, as well.

The editors have the final decision on publication and will notify authors directly regarding the publication decision. There is no guarantee of publication implied. Manuscripts are reviewed by at least two readers.

All session participants, including students interested in the student paper competition, must submit an abstract and an AV request form. The deadline for submitting abstracts for paper and panel sessions is May 19, 2008. All abstracts must be accompanied by payment for conference registration ($125; $50 students). No late submissions will be accepted. Checks should be payable to the Applied Geography Conferences, Inc., or registration can be done online using PayPal (registration link).

Students submitting abstracts for the Student Poster session must submit them by September 21, 2008 and must pay the student registration fee ($50) at that time.  The abstracts must be in the proper format.

Abstracts should be submitted as a separate file and limited to 150 words. Please use the style guide for abstract preparation.

If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Jay Lee.

Participants may submit ONE manuscript (single or co-authored) only for possible publication in the Papers of the AGC.
